Ambassador James Okonkwo has represented his country in international legal matters for over two decades and has been an active member of the JF Community since its founding. We sat down with him to discuss his career, the evolving landscape of international law, and why community matters.
What drew you to international law?
I grew up during a time of significant regional conflict, and I saw firsthand how disputes between nations could devastate ordinary people's lives. I believed—and still believe—that international law offers a framework for resolving these conflicts peacefully. The ICJ represents the pinnacle of that vision: a place where even the smallest nations can stand equal before the law.
How has the JF Community influenced your work?
The relationships I've built here have been invaluable. International law can feel isolating when you're working on complex cases, but this community reminds you that you're part of a larger effort. I've collaborated with members on research, sought advice from colleagues during difficult negotiations, and found mentors who helped shape my approach to diplomacy. It's not just professional—it's personal.
